My first Smith ancestor to live in Montgomery County, Arkansas was Samuel Mitchell Smith. Samuel was born September 19,1831 in Bedford County, Tennessee. He was the son of Josiah Joseph Smith and Nancy Z. Roberts. (In the book, "Memoirs of Western Arkansas", the biography of Samuel Smith, states that his mother was Amanda "Nancy Drake, but that is an error. His mother was Nancy Z.Roberts. Samuel was the 3rd child of Josiah and Nancy Roberts Smith.) Amanda Drake was Josiah Smith's 2nd wife, but they had no children. Josiah was married a 3rd time to Mary Ann Roberts, a niece of his first wife, Nancy Z.Roberts. They did have 5 children. Samuel Smith was in Montgomery County, AR. in 1952. Samuel married Naoma Ann "Malvina" Goodner, in Bedford County, Tennessee in 1853. Malvina was born in Wayne County, Tennessee in 1831 and died in Oden, Arkansas in 1862. Samuel and Malvina had four children: Listed below.

I had two grandparents from the same Smith family. Josiah Joseph Smith and Susannah Goodner Smith were brother and sister. Children of John Jackson Smith Jr. and Patsy Haggard Smith.

Susannah Smith married John Cunningham Goodner, and their daughter, Naoma Ann Malvina Goodner married Josiah Joseph Smith and Nancy Z. Roberts Smith's son, Samuel Mitchell Smith. Malvina and Samuel were 1st cousins.
Their marriage also made Susannah, Samuel's mother-in-law, as well as his aunt, and made Josiah, Malvina's father-in-law, as well as her uncle.
